Aberdour Station
Best Station Garden in the UK
The new Community Rail Awards are UK wide and focus on rewarding excellence and promoting best practice in community rail development work. Over 300 guests attended the event, which featured 13 categories and in excess of 200 award entries from organisations and individuals throughout the industry, local government and the voluntary sector.
The station's large variety of plants, flowers and shrubs are all thanks to the hard work of Trevor Francis, First ScotRail's green fingered station Grade B at Aberdour, who was keen for staff and passengers to be able to enjoy a stunning station environment. The garden is typified by the use of 20 hanging baskets, seven window boxes and two wheel barrows, one of which belonged to North British Railways and which Trevor has had restored to its original state.
Trevor commented on the accolade, "I appreciate the arts but can't paint, so this is my contribution. I use colour and a variety of plants to make it beautiful. It's my way of making the world a better place, so I am absolutely delighted that Aberdour won the award for being the Best Station Garden in the UK."
Andy Mellors, Deputy Managing Director said, "This is great news for Aberdour and special thanks should go to Trevor for all his hard work. The award is also a reflection on all the great work that is being done across our stations to improve the overall journey experience for both staff and passengers and I hope will be an encouragement to continue the work."
