Mystery is one of those spices we are recommended to add to our lives.  Yet it seems to me that Beaford is sadly short on this spice.  Round us there is plenty of mystery  - Torrington has a vast history to explore, Rosemoor's mysteries are of the earth, science and evolution, St Giles in the Wood has genealogy galore and Dolton has an intriguing stone marked Dolton 2 Dowland 0 - but where do we look in Beaford?  The "passport ceramic" is still above the school entrance and those claws by the main road cause passers-by to wonder what is about to rise out of the ground.  The church must have wonders to interpret.  Whence do the new houses take their inspiration and what do they promise?   Even the inn sign must have a puzzle to solve.  Who can offer help on these village stories?  Your Editor would welcome any enlightenment on these and any other mysteries.

The History of Valentine's Day

Every February, across the coun inspiration and what do they promistry, chocolates, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
