Welcome to the Covingham Website
The first known inhabitants in the Covingham area were the Romans in 43AD. Durocornovium is on the edge of Covingham close to the A419 slip road, this was the ideal place to create a Roman Trading Town at the junction of Ermin Street and Brokene Street as the local area's kimeridge clay was a valuable natural resource for the Romans to make pots from.
In 1964 an excavation uncovered a square enclosure with pottery including New Forest Samian Ware Pot, coins and many other items that can be viewed in the Swindon Museum in Bath Road, it is believed that a villa would have stood in this area. Patheon, formally Rousell, is also built upon roman mosaic and remains were also discovered in the grounds of Dorcan Technology College when former Headteacher, Barry Fenby, supported investigation works in the grounds.
