Cusop is situated in the far west of the county of Herefordshire, neighbouring Hay-on-Wye and the County of Powys. It is a linear settlement based in an Area of Great Landscape Value, and borders Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park. The village has a small playing field, a parish room and a church, but looks across the border towards Hay-on-Wye for many of its service needs.
The electoral role contains the names of just over 300 people living in 175 households, more than 20% of residents are retired.
Whilst Cusop depends on Hay for many things such as doctors, dentists, schools, public houses and a variety of shops, Hay in turn depends on Cusop for the main super market (Co-op), main farmers store and main builders merchant. Until Beeching, Cusop even had the railway station for Hay.
There is an extremely limited bus service between Hay and Hereford in one direction and Hay and Brecon in the other, as a consequence the population is very dependant on the motor car.
The bookshops of Hay bring in many tourist throughout the year and once at year, at the end of May, the Hay Festival of Literature brings huge numbers of people to the area. As a consequence there are a number of bed and breakfast businesses in the parish.
