DC NEWS

OWAIN GLYNDWR DAY- SEPTEMBER 16TH 2009

A FLYAWAY SUCESS!

Our Memorial Hall was packed with local residents to celebrate Owain Glyndwr Day using the community's new flagpole. The day was sunny with just the right amount of breeze to flutter the standard of the great man.

Sally Roberts Jones, writer and historian, novelist Alex Coggan and Assembly Member Bethan Jenkins spoke during the afternoon and we were treated to some wonderful music from reknowned harpist Novella Roberts-Lewis. A very welcome guest was Mr. Don Brock who has been really missed lately as well as home-grown historian Robert King and historian Canon Lodwick.

Local schoolchildren came along to learn about Wales' most important historical figure and then the flag was raised by current council chairman, Cllr. Gwyn Edwards.

Last year's council chair Cllr. Margaret Smith donated her chairman's allowance to purchase flags for the community including the flag of St. David, Y Ddraig Goch and the Union Jack. Thanks go to  Cllr. Smith for this and also for organising the occasion which will live in the memory of our community.

Easter Bunny Cracks Longford.

Unfortunately due to the cold weather we did not have the egg hunt but the council held an indoor Easter event at the hall where fun and games for the children were arranged with a disco as well.

The Easter Bonnet Parade was a joy to behold. The entries get more ingenious by the year.

LAST YEARS EVENTS- 2007

Dyffryn Clydach Community Celebration Week was a great success. The week commenced with an Open Bowls Session up at the Memorial Hall. Councillor Margaret Smith went along and had a great morning there with the regular bowlers. If you have not tried Short Mat Bowls before then why not drop in there next Monday at ten o'clock. You don't have to have your own equipment as the council has its own woods for public use and you would be made very welcome by Gretta and the gang.

We have had many requests to repeat the Tea Dance and hopefully we will be looking at holding another in September.

The Community Quiz is another event that is sure to be repeated. Quizmaster Ken Thomas hosted an evening of strong competition. 1st Prize went to 'The Black Sheep' led by Boyd Foster, 2nd Prize went to Dyffryn Clydach Environmental Group while 3rd Prize went to ' The Smiths Legs'. The quiz prize money was kindly donated by local garages, Monastery Motors and Neath Abbey Motor Body Repairs.  We won't tell you who won the wooden spoon, you will have to come along next time and find out. Thanks too to June of the Smiths Arms for donating a Sunday Lunch for Two as a raffle prize and to all the teams who made the evening for us and lastly to Ken for devising a fiendish set of questions for us. We will be calling on his services again soon.

Dyffryn Clydach Charity Prize Bingo was played as it always is on Friday evening of the celebration week. Councillor Gwyn Edwards calls the bingo for all the groups who fundraise in this way. On average, over a hundred pounds can be raised in an evening for your good cause so why not give it a try? Unlike carnival and fete stalls this is one money spinner that does not rely on good weather!
Ring Councillor Jennifer Davies who will be pleased to answer any questions on the hows and whys of it. 01792 814472.

Dyffryn Clydach Family Fun Day was amazing this year. We had the only fine day out of a fortnight of appalling weather so we must be doing something right up here!
Ozzie the Osprey paid us a long visit with signed posters for the kids while Ken and Steff provided the music to get us all in a holiday mood.  We had a marvellous Art Display from the children of Neath Abbey Infants School and Early Years Unit in the Hall.
Busy Bees Fundraisers were in attendance with their Save a Dalmation from Cruella stall. As well as selling home made cakes and Jams there was delicious Elderflower Champagne made from Dyffryn Clydach elderflowers, this year's vintage!
Dyffryn Clydach Environmental Group had their Rainbow Tombola, Gwyneth Jenkins and her Wheel of Chance, and many more. Val Berni and Janet Thomas had stalls where the children could make cards and bird feeders which was very popular. With a barbecue and refreshments from the kitchen there was plenty to eat and for the kids we had a bouncy castle and Loopy Lew, the children's entertainer who certainly lived up to his name. Thanks to everyone in the community who worked hard to help us make this Fun Day the best we have ever had.

Dyffryn Clydach Community Council is already making plans for next year's Community Celebration Week and we are always keen to hear your ideas and suggestions so speak to any of your local councillors  or ring Alyson on 01792 528754
