HONITON MARKET TOWN AND COMMUNITY

 HONITON DEVON WELCOMES YOU -

     THANK YOU FOR VISITING

The market town of Honiton -The Town in the Country, until 1974 a municipal borough, is located just off the A30 trunk road and is the eastern gateway to the county of Devon from the A30 and the A303; to the west the A30 provides easy access to Exeter Airport and the City of Exeter. The town is also the hub of a road system including the A35 trunk road to the Channel Ports, the A373 to Tiverton and North Devon, the A375 to the South Coast at Sidmouth and via short sections of the A30 and A303, the B3170 to Taunton.

Honiton railway station (West of England Main Line: London Waterloo-Basingstoke-Andover-Salisbury-Axminster-Honiton-Exeter Central) is on the edge of the town centre.

Thriving street markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays along the High Street continue a tradition extending back more than 750 years. Enquiries can be directed to the Market Supervisor, Mr. T. Lenton, telephone 07980 922696 (on market days). Honiton's third traditional market day is a Thursday but at present the street market does not operate on Thurdays and the farmers' market originally held in the Lace Walk Car Park and more recently on the forecourt of St. Paul's Church in the High Street, was suspended on Thursdays during August 2009.

The long main street of Honiton is lined by Georgian shops and houses, built after fires had destroyed most of the town in the 18th Century.

Honiton's Lace is world-famous. Queen Charlotte wore a dress of Honiton lace at her wedding to King George III in 1761. Honiton's Allhallows Museum, by St. Paul's Church, contains a valuable collection of Honiton Lace.

Honiton Pottery is well known and examples of this, too, are in the museum as well as being stocked by shops specialising in antiques and other collectables, of which there are a large number in the town.

Allhallows Museum also holds a wealth of genealogical information and with links to the Devon Record Office and participating in the on-line parish clerks scheme, is a good source to tackle any "family tree" queries you may have. E-mail
info@honitonmuseum.co.uk or telephone 01404 44966.

The Parish of Honiton includes countryside, much of which is of sufficient merit to be within either the Blackdown Hills or the East Devon nationally designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty; this makes the town an ideal centre for walking or touring (see the Two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty webpage on this website).

Honiton Tourist Information Centre is in the main Lace Walk car park, off the A373 Dowell Street and with pedestrian links to the High Street.  http://www.visithoniton.com/                                                                                                                                  E-mail honitontic@btconnect.com or telephone 01404 43716.
