LONG STRATTON VILLAGE HALL
Charity Registration Number 304079 /55150
The Long Stratton Village Hall was built in 1905 and was opened on May 30th 1906
- the opening was a very grand affair with numerous men of the church and local dignitaries attending. There was also a Prince in attendance, Prince Frederick Duleep Singh. Proceedings started at 2.30pm in the church of St Mary's with an organ recital, followed by a service conducted by Rev C.B Bradford M.A Rector of Holt. Guests then adjourned to the Village Hall for an address by Rev. Dr. Jessop representing the foundress.
Rev Dr Jessop of Scarning, amongst all his other activities, was a campaigner for improving the life of the working countryman and an article he had written in 1900 on their behalf was answered when he received a letter from a lady he had never heard of who had been so struck by his article that she was willing to place £1000 a year for four years into his hands for him to spend as he thought best in the promotion of his ideas.
It was however, a condition by the benefactor that her name should not be disclosed until after her death.
Rev Jessop chose to promote his ideas by building village halls - first at Scarning, then at Long Stratton. The purpose of these halls was to provide facilities for instruction, lectures, library, .games and social entertainments, and for the use by mothers and their children so long as the children were not too young.
There were strict rules laid down for use of the halls.
Since the opening of the hall it has been well used and it tried to keep to keep the cost to the minimum for the beneficeries who use the hall
