Parish Information
Settlements: Lynchmere, Hammer and Camelsdale
Population: 2001 census - 2,225
The parish of Lynchmere includes the villages of Hammer and Camelsdale as well as the hamlet of Lynchmere and is the northernmost parish in the Chichester District. It is bordered on the north by the River Wey (which divides West Sussex and Surrey), on the west by Bramshott in Hampshire, on the south by the Shulbrede stream and to the east by Fernhurst. Lynchmere probably began as a Saxon settlement and the church, St. Peter's, has Saxon origins. In 1200, during the reign of King John, an Augustinian monastery was founded at Shulbrede, at the bottom of the hill below the church. Hammer, originally the site of 16th century iron works, developed around the brickworks which became important in the 19th century. Camelsdale was developed at the same time. There are several other churches in the parish; St. Paul's in Camelsdale and St. Michael's, a chapel of ease of St. Peter's, Lynchmere, although it is not currently used for worship and acts as a church hall, and the Three Counties church in Hammer.
The parish owns a recreation ground in Camelsdale and two in Hammer, one being used mainly by the Hammer United Football Club. A further ground is leased at Hammer Hill by a residents association from the Cowdray Estate. There are several sports and social clubs, including football, stoolball, cricket, boules, over 60's, WI and scouts/guides/cubs/ rainbows/brownies and various church groups. There is a vibrant first school at Camelsdale and a playgroup. The parish also enjoys National Trust and other commons which afford recreational facilities. There is a local bus service from Haslemere to the south coast and main line station at Haslemere, nearby.
