SWANS ON MIDDLETON WOOD

Hello!

Welcome to the

village of Middleton

Middleton is a rural community situated approximately 4 miles from the coastal resort of Morecambe, famous as the birthplace of Eric Morecambe, a resort famous for its panoramic views over Morecambe bay to the magnificent Lakeland mountains and breathtaking sunsets. To the south the University city of Lancaster with its colourful history of a bygone age, the Castle dominates the skyline overlooking the city below, this bastion of a bygone age, sentinel of the tidal river Lune, witnessed many illegal slave ships with their tragic human cargo, a testament of mans inhumanity to man throughout history. The castle is also notorious for its Pendle witches trials and executions, gruesome tales of a bygone age.   Lancaster University adds to the indigenous population of the city and creates a diverse and vibrant culture.

Middleton, originally a Quaker settlement has grown from a small farming community, mainly cattle and sheep, a village, once dominated by the ICI/Shell petro chemical site which is now Middelton Wood. The village lives amicable side by side with tourism and there are a number of large static caravan sites extending to the coast at Middleton Sands, the population increases dramatically in the summer months. Middleton Sands is popular with biplane enthusiasts and during summer months the sands are very busy with small aircraft. On a clear day Blackpool tower and the skyline of Barrow are clear on the horizon. The village has a Post office and a public house 'The Old Roof Tree Inn' which has its own interesting and ghostly history, (see separate web page for details). A log fire sets the scene for this friendly pub. Quiz nights every Thursday 9pm.

Middleton green is the centre of the village with a children?s playground due to be replaced with modern EU standard safety equipment. From the green there is a superb view of the Penine Chain of mountains, known as the backbone of England.

The current adult population is 442 according to the register of electors. A community that cares for its elderly and children, we have avoided many of the social problems that afflict larger communities around the borough.

The village has a Parish Hall, recently renovated by the probation services. A place to meet for various groups, Dance classes, Archery, indoor bowling, TA Cadets and Car boots provide leisure opportunities for residents of the area. Hire of the hall is very reasonable at £6.60 per hour. Ideal for children's parties as the hall can accommodate Bouncy Castle?s with ease. The Council has a child protection policy for children?s parties per ratio of adults to children to protect the more vulnerable members of our society. The kitchen is also available for making tea etc. Adult parties have access to the Middleton Billiards & Social club bar facilities for no extra charge. For further information telephone Barbara -854752. We also have a large sports field which boasts two football pitches and tennis courts.

'MAGIC Carousel' was founded September 2003 with five inaugural members MAGIC  standing for 'Middleton Action Group Investing In Children'  The charity has raised £82,000 for a new children's playground, work to start February 2005 weather permitting. For future events look in the diary. For further information click the link to The MAGIC Carousel.

STOP PRESS:  SLAVONIAN GREBE PHOTOGRAPHED ON WOOD. SEE MIDDLETON WOOD PAGE ON THIS SITE.

Middleton Wood previously derelict land has been landscaped with hundreds of young trees and new ponds for the abundant wildlife. The area has the largest population of Dragonfly in the North West. Swans and Ducks have made their homes on the ponds. Ornithologists regularly inspect the bird life and have started a census of the bird population. The area is a favourite with dog owners, but may I remind them to be a responsible owner and clean up after your pet. Doggy Bins for that purpose are situated at all main entrances.

Middleton Billiards and Social Club occupies part of the village hall and their bar is available upon request for private functions. New members are welcomed. Anyone interested in forming a snooker team, darts or dominoes see any of the staff for further information. Quiz nights are every Sunday 9-30pm in a congenial atmosphere.
