Spice Girls Review

  Spice Girls World Tour

Thursday 3rd January,

O2 Stadium

Written by Emma Cox

I was very lucky to see The Spice Girls at the O2 Stadium on Thursday 3rd January 2008 and what an experience it was. We were all big Spice Girls fans back in the day and didn't really know what to expect but we certainly weren't disappointed.

The stadium itself was pretty mind blowing - high ceilings, vibrant lighting, shops, restaurants and bars all before you even reach the arena. Hordes of people piled their way in, gradually filling up the 20,000 seats available. We had fantastic seats, in the middle and five rows from the front. We all waited in anticipation for the concert to start. Suddenly people in front and to the side stood up, cameras and mobile phones were raised, people shouting and pointing, intrigued, we stood up too, only to see the Beckham's children take their seats on the front row. It really was amazing and quite frightening how much attention the three, young boys got from the on-looking crowds. Security was immense, with huge body guards standing either end of their row, watching the crowds every move. Suddenly, the lights went out, the screams got louder, all eyes focussed on the front, strobe lights scanned the crowd - the concert had begun.

The girls suddenly appeared on podiums, in extravagant, glittery costumes that wowed the audience - I was transformed back to the time when all I ever wanted to be was a spice girl, believing I could sing unbelievably well. Of course forgetting that I was singing along with 19,999 other people and my voice was being somewhat drowned out.

The Spice Girls sang all of their classics like Wannabe, Spice up your Life, Mama and 2 become 1 plus their 2007 Children in Need song, Friendship never ends.

Each spice girl did solo performances representing their careers after The Spice Girls split. Geri Halliwell sang ‘Its Raining Men', Emma Bunton sang ‘Maybe', Melanie B sang ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way' to an unexpected member of the audience who was dragged up onto the stage with her, Melanie C sang her hit ‘I Turn to You' and Victoria Beckham looked fabulous strutting down the runway in a beautiful black dress, bright red lipstick and aviator shades.

The stage sets were magnificent displaying cartoon visuals and an array of dazzling lighting and costumes designed by Roberto Cavalli.

They ended the show with a medley of disco classics including ‘We are Family' which captivated the audience and left us truly satisfied.

A magical show and well recommended to all.
