SHIPLAKE PARISH COUNCIL
The official site of the Shiplake Parish Council may now be found at www.shiplakeparish.org.uk. The Parish Clerk is Roger Hudson on 07809 829628 or, by e-mail on shiplakepc@hotmail.com.
Shiplake is a village about 2 miles south of Henley-on-Thames extending from the River Thames west across the A4155 up to its junction with Binfield Heath Parish. The area close to the river is mainly large dwellings with river frontages. The rest of Lower Shiplake grew up around the railway line that provides a service to London Paddington and Henley.
The older part of the village lies in the area known as Shiplake Cross close to the Church of Ss Peter and Paul, the Memorial Hall in Memroial Avenue and Shiplake College on the main road and the Church of England Primary School in Plough Lane.
The church is now part of a United Benefice of Shiplake with Dunsden and Harpsden cum Bolney and includes All Saints Chucrh in Dunsden and St. Mararet's in Harpsden under the Rector, Rev. Dr. Martin Connop-Price.
At the Memorial Hall grounds are situated Shiplake Tennis Club and Shiplake Village Bowling Club. Both are very active clubs and welcome new members.
There are also other sports clubs and a new very active Village Community Club that holds its meetings at the Sidney Harrison House in Mill Road, Lower Shiplake. There is also a good Women's Institute branch in the village.
Shiplake Lock is a splendid spot to see some of the glories of the River Thames and to watch the many craft using it.
Refreshment by way of food and drink is available at the two public houses in the village and a third just over the border of the junction with Binfield Heath. The Baskerville Arms by the station also provides accommodation and the Plowden Arms on the A4155 food and drink as does the White Hart in Plough Lane.
The village also boasts an excellent butcher's shop in Northfield Road run by a young man, Keith Whiting, while the Corner Shop in Station Road has a good supply of groceries and confectionery as well as running the Post Office. In addition Shiplake Motors provide an excellent service for the motorist.
For the youngsters we have troops of Scouts and Brownies meetig at the Scout Hut or in the Memorial Hall. The older members of the parish are catered for by the Rosemary Club.
The Parish Council has nine councillors and meets on the second Monday in every month except August - usually in the Memorial Hall. We also have the local councillors for both South Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire County Council living in the village and they reguarly attend our Parish Council meetings.
