Thakeham Evening WI
Thakeham Evening WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 8 pm in Thakeham Village Hall. It's not "jam and Jerusalem", although some of our members can cook and others can sing. This a new group, officially formed early in 2006, for women of the village who could not join the existing WI group because of commitments to children or work.Meetings are light-hearted but informative, in line with the Women's Institute ideals of truth, justice, tolerance and fellowship. The National Federation of Women's Institutes (NFWI) began in 1915 and now has 215,000 members in England, Wales and the Islands. The Sussex Federation was formed in 1917 and now has over 120 WI groups, each different from all the others. Since its formation in 1915, the NFWI has campaigned on issues that matter to women and their communities. Current campaigns include climate, the environment, chemicals, Fairtrade, and diet (especially children's). Thakeham Evening group takes an active interest in these issues, discussed during meetings. Each meeting has an invited speaker, and so far we have had a barbecue cookery demonstration (and tasting) in the car park, a talk by Thakeham Morris, and lessons on decorating impressive cakes, making corsages, and self-defence (not all on the same night). Each talk ends up with full audience involvement. We are planning family social events and outings for autumn and spring, and welcome new members. A website will follow soon to give details of forthcoming meetings and events, but in the meantime for more information please contact jenbill@talktalk.com or gillianj.bird@virgin.net.
