School News November 2007
Marsh Baldon School News We were pleased to welcome several new pupils at the start of term, all of whom are settling in well. In the third week of term seventeen pupils from Class 3 went on a residential week at Yenworthy outdoor activities centre, accompanied by the headteacher, Mrs Jo Capel Davies. During their stay the children took part in activities such as surfing, rock climbing, coasteering, zip-wiring and making beach sculptures. They had a ‘wet & wild' day which involved canoeing and climbing down a waterfall. One of the highlights was (safely) making fires on the beach and toasting marshmallows. Everyone had a great time and the learning from their experiences continues back in school. One outcome was a presentation to parents and governors at the annual parents' meeting. Later in the term our older pupils, who are studying the Tudors, will be visiting Sulgrave Manor where they will be able to dress in Tudor costumes. After their trip they are hoping for a visit from Queen Elizabeth I so they can quiz her on the "hot seat". As you may have seen in the local press, the school received an environmental award from the Oxford Preservation Trust for the rebuilding of the school after the fire. These awards recognise the contribution made to the preservation and enhancement of Oxford's heritage. Ours was one of only six projects across the county to be recognised in this way. At the presentation ceremony the Trust Director, Debbie Dance, said " The rebuilding of the school following such a devastating fire has given heart to the young community and contributed to the village conservation area." At the end of the summer term all our pupils were involved in the creation and making of a large mosaic. This has been paid for from the Parish Council's Millenium Fund. We hope to be able to put the mosaic up as soon as we have found someone to help us with this. Once we have a date arranged for the unveiling we shall be inviting everyone from the local community so that we can thank you for your support. Sue Benton
