Barnstaple Town Council Guided tours of the Guildhall
Enter through the gated archway in Butchers Row and discover the wealth of treasures inside this historic building, centre to Barnstaple's history over the last two centuries. The Guildhall will again open its doors to visitors on Saturdays from 12th April 2008 for the summer season. The guided tour includes a visit to the main Chamber, previously the Town's Court Room. Recently restored portraits of Councillors from days gone by cover the walls, while above the main bench are portraits of Barnstaple's great benefactor William Rock, and the Barnstaple born poet and playwright John Gay. Next door the Dodderidge Room contains the Town Plate, and among the treasures on show here are the Mayors ceremonial chain, together with the chains of the Master Butchers and Bakers of Barnstaple.
