Picturesque Bosbury

Welcome to our lovely village.

Bosbury's Saxon name was Bosamberig, or Bosa's town. King Offa gifted the area to the Church. In the 8th Century it became a residence of the Bishops of Hereford, and the remains of their summer palace can still be seen on Church Lane.

By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, it had become a village of some importance. As well as a market, there was a mediaeval dwelling of the Knights Templars on the Ledbury side of the town, which still has traces of a moat, and, of course, the Bishop's Palace, which apparently was the favourite residence of the great Bishop Cantilupe, St. Thomas of Hereford.

Over the succeeding years, Bosbury was a typical farming community, its surrounding local heavy clay proving perfect ground for hops and apples. Bosbury had shops, blacksmiths, a school, and four pubs, of which The Bell Inn is still serving good, country meals with decent ales and local cider.

Today, Bosbury boasts a Parish Hall which is host to many clubs and activities, a tennis court and bowling green, cricket and football teams, and even an amateur dramatic group "The Bosbury Players". Our lovely Church of the Holy Trinity boasts an excellent choir and a regular band of bell-ringers who ring, as required, for weekly services and weddings in the church's unique separate bell tower dating from the thirteenth century. Bosbury C of E Primary School has over 130 pupils and is very fortunate to have large grassy playing areas always put to good use by the children and their families.
