The village of Chaldon is situated to the west of Caterham-on-the-Hill and is apparently referred to as early as 675 AD. Until the early 20th century it comprised just six farms and St Peter & St Paul Church, but has since grown into a popular residential area. The church is noted for its early medieval wall painting which covers the whole surface of the west wall. It depicts in great detail a judgement scene and was discovered in 1869 beneath whitewash.
