Reached by a narrow road network first laid down by the Romans, and situated amid farmland between the A22 and the A27 lies the parish of Chalvington with Ripe. Set at the foot of the glorious South Downs, 8 miles from the County town of Lewes and 13 miles from the sunshine Coast of Eastbourne, the community boasts easy access to miles of footpaths and bridle ways for walkers and riders, field sports and other leisure activities, close proximity to Glyndebourne Festival Opera, three friendly pubs, and affordable rooms in nearby bed and breakfast accommodation, which is all within a short drive of beaches at Seaford or the port of Newhaven.

Ripe Stores and Post Office serve both villages, as does Kudos Foods, which specialises in handmade ready meals, and bespoke menus for parties and celebrations. Ripe village pub, the Lamb Inn, owned by the Shepherd Neame brewery and run by Julian and Claire, is an old coaching inn with a lovely garden, good restaurant and a cosy bar warmed by a welcoming open fire. Situated in Chalvington is the Yew Tree Inn, a free house, which serves great beer and is famously home to the third oldest cricket ground in England. Out towards Golden Cross is Deanland Wood Park, a park homes estate that has its own swimming pool, community hall, its own inn boasting weekly live entertainment and many other facilities.
