Chilton Polden Parish Council The Somerset village of Chilton Polden lies to the north of the A39, approximately 5 miles east of Bridgwater and 8 miles west of Street. Like the surrounding villages, Chilton Polden has an old English/Saxon name, (It is referred to in the Domesday Survey as "Ceptone.") However, a settlement was here in earlier times. The Romans built saltworks on the edge of the present day village where it joined the, as yet undrained, saltmarsh. The A39 was originally a Roman troop road built by local British slave labour. The locals were not allowed to use the Roman road but had their own route which linked the Polden villages. (The present day "Broadway".)The land environment at the heart of each of the Polden Villages has been designated an area of high archaeological potential and, as recently as 1996, remains, identified as Roman in origin, were uncovered in Chilton Polden during the laying of a new sewage pipeline.
