St Hugh's is the largest occupied monastery in the country. It was built, a mere 120 years ago, for a community of a hundred monks but today it is occupied by only 20-odd priests and lay-brothers. At one time it seemed to face inevitable closure and the scattering of its community among Charterhouses in other countries; but grants by English Heritage and the mother house in Chartreuse have saved the day and now the monastery is carrying on.
