Paper Mill
Creech St Michael Paper Mill, commissioned by William Sommerville for his sons Alexander Annandale Sommerville and Robert Grieve Sommerville, was designed by Mr Foster an architect from Bristol, and it was built by Mr Holbrow, also from Bristol. It was built from bricks manufactured by Wm Thomas & Co of Wellington who were obviously proud of their product as they included a photograph of the building in their sales literature in 1909. The factory occupied some 75,000 square feet..
School
There were several 'schools' in Creech St Michael in operation in the 19th Century. Some of these were 'dame' schools and were on a small scale, usually held in private houses. It was not until the 1870 Education Act that this system of educating children changed. The act allowed for the provision of schools where non had previously existed. In 1872 there was also a school for young ladies run by Mrs Caroline Taylor.
