Garw Valley

Welome to the Garw Valley Community Council

The Garw Valley is a former coal-mining community nestling amongst the hillsides of the former central Glamorgan being juxtaposed between the Ogmore & Llynfi Valleys. These three valleys which comprise the highland area of Bridgend County Borough descend sharply southwards to a junction immediately to the north of Bridgend where the rivers merge before continuing on through the Vale of Glamorgan to the coast at Ogmore by Sea.

The Garw itself stretches approximately 6 miles north to south rising steeply until it reaches Carn & Werfa mountains which dominate the northern region of the valley historically referred to as the Rhyl valley but now more commonly known as Garw Fechan.

The notably steep gradient of the slopes of Garw Fechan has precluded any major urban development and for this reason it remains a particularly peaceful and undisturbed area.

The derivation of the name Garw has been a confusing and often contentious issue. The general opinion is that the name originates from the Welsh word Garw meaning rough.

It was the view of a local schoolteacher that the name comes from a corruption of the Welsh word Ceirw meaning deer. Herds of deer once roamed freely over the local hills.
