Sheep urine helps pollution?

The urine has been refined into pure urea and is sprayed into exhaust fumes to reduce harmful emissions of nitrous dioxide. This is a trial scheme which is being run by Hampshire county council and transport company Stagecoach. They have fitted the technology onto a bus in Winchester and they hope to roll out the scheme to other vehicles soon.

The waste is colourless and odourless and cuts the toxic gasses in exhaust fumes. The ammonia in the urine reacts with nitrous dioxide and converts them to nitrogen gas and water, which is released as steam.

Managing director of Stagecoach, said: "This is a serious project, air quality is an issue in so many towns and cities, particularly historic ones like Winchester."

They are hoping to fit many more buses in Winchester very soon.
