Welcome to Kirkby on Bain Parish Community website Standing on the banks of the River Bain, Kirkby on Bain enjoys its own Public House, Church and Primary School. Wherever Kirk (meaning Church) forms part of a place name it tells us there was a church existing there before that time. So, as Kirkby is mentioned in the doomsday book in 1085, we can be quite sure there was a church here in Saxon times. The second syllable tells us that the Danes made this a habitation as the ending "by" which is the Danish word for abode or residence - there are more Dane names to be found in Lincolnshire than any other county. The total inhabitants of Kirkby on Bain today number less than 1,000, who are severed by a parish Council of 7. The Chairperson is Mrs. Joyce Stephenson, with Mr. Alwyn Killingsworth as Parish clerk. Our nearest towns are: Horncastle: a busy mid-Lincolnshire market town with a residential population of approximately 5,500 serving a wide rural catchment area. The town is situated at the southern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds approximately 21 miles east of Lincoln and Woodhall Spa: approximately 18 miles south east of Lincoln and 6 miles west of the market town of Horncastle. The village is a recognised centre for tourism in the area.
