CHURCHSTANTON: PARISH AND COMMUNITY PAGE

Churchstanton is situated in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the River Otter forming the boundary with Otterford Parish. The river, impounded for a mile of its length to form the Otterhead Lakes, was the county boundary until 1896 when Churchstanton was transferred from Devonshire to Somerset. Honiton, Devon, was for many years the post town for Otterhead House.

Churchstanton includes former estate farms such as Royston Farm and Trents Farm and the western and north-western parts of the present-day Otterhead Estate with the site of Otterhead House; the House Leat; the lower section of the Bypass Leat; most of the surviving heritage rhododendrons as well as the Coach House and half of every lake and many of the Snowdrops and Bluebells.
