Welcome to the village of Pitney. Pitney is situated between Somerton and Langport in Somerset and has a population of 416. Half a mile east of Low Ham is the medieval village of Pitney which gave its name to the local Hundred. A Roman villa was unearthed here in the last century - one of the many which have been found in this district. The church retains its medieval tower and contains a fifteenth century font and Jacobean pulpit, also some fine wood carving by modern Somerset craftsmen. Near the door is a holy water stoup. The village itself contains many old thatched cottages and farmhouses, built of the local blue lias in a peaceful, sheltered valley and a little stream flowing through it with a road on either side. In jest, reference is often made locally to the mythical Pitney Harbour, this myth however could well have a true origin for there is a very low spot as one enters the village from High Ham and before the drainage of the moors when the water level was much higher than it is now, a tributary of the Yeo could have flowed through here from Huish and reached the sea by way of King's Sedgemoor. Little boats might well have tied up here bringing goods to and from Pitney.
