Community PolicingPioneering Initiative

Opened in September 1996, the Southwater Community Police Office is a unique facility for Southwater, set up and run by volunteers from the Community.

The office, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, is manned by a team of 20 volunteers who have been trained by the police force to deal with incidents that range from anti-social behaviour to road traffic accidents, and also offer support to crime prevention initiatives and schemes in the village.

The office currently deals with a wide range of duties including passing on information to the police from the public, handling lost and found property and pets, filling out crime reports, fielding queries and acting as a link between the public, local beat officers, PCSO's and Horsham Police Station. The office also offers a security marking service for mobile phones and bikes.

Unsung HeroesQueen's Award

The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary service by groups in the community was presented to the Southwater Community Police Office by the Lord Lieutenant in September 2006 in a special ceremony held at Beeson House, Lintot Square. Dozens of guests gathered to celebrate its success with a buffet and drinks reception in the Council Chambers. The award recognised outstanding achievement for helping others to improve the quality of life.

Unexploded Bomb! UXB

An unexploded artillery shell from the first world war was found in Southwater and handed in to the Southwater Community Police Office. Children had been found playing with the device in a field nearby before a local resident took it into the Police Office. The bomb squad then attended to carry out a controlled explosion and the blast indicated that the device had been live

It was later identified as a 40mm high explosive artillery shell from 1914 but it could not be confirmed if the shell had been fired, had failed to detonate or had simply been discarded.

Community Office Volunteer, Jane Curtis, was awarded Divisional Congratulations by the Sussex Police in recognition of her calm and decisive action when the shell was brought into the Community Police Office in Southwater. With the risks to public safety uppermost in her mind, she alerted local business units of the danger and called for the relevant specialist assistance. Despite the risks involved, she remained on the scene until help arrived.

Horsham Police later stressed that if local residents should find anything unusual of this nature, they should not touch or move it but call the police immediately, who will take the appropriate action. He added that on this occasion there were some very lucky children out there.

 Meercat WatchSouthwater Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever. Behind it lies a simple idea, and a central value shared by millions of people around the country:

Getting together with your neighbours to take action can cut local crime.

Saved by the Bell?

Here's a great idea! By tying a cat bell to your purse, you can ensure that it will make a noise if anyone tries to take it without your knowledge. We have some of these in stock, so why not pop into the Community Police office in Lintot Square (above the library in Beeson House) and pick one up?
