Glen Quey Reservoir 2008 Season
March The reservoir is back up to full level and some repairs have been carried out during the winter on the dam head. These repairs are completed now .Good job the season does not start until the first of April as you would need Artic gear too keep you warm at the moment. The fish should be well distributed round the reservoir for the start of the season. April One or two fishermen have been out on the reservoir but to date there has not been any feed back from them. It is still cold and at times there has been snow covering the hills round the reservoir. Once the weather warms up a bit it should bring the fish to the surface to feed. May The fish are starting to show on the surface at last. The catch rates are starting to rise With most traditional wets and dry fly doing the trick also Nymphs are doing well. Asking around it seems to be the fly the angler has most confidence in seems to be the fly to use. Everybody seems to be taking them on different fly. The rain is on its way at last it should make a difference to the loch and liven up the bigger fish in the water. June There is plenty fish being caught and it seems to be a mixture of native fish up to 8ozs and some stock fishin the 1lbs class. When the rise is on fish up to 3lbs + can be seen out in the reservoir taking the fly of the top of the water. These fish come in closer to the bank as the light fades and a Black Gnat dry can tempt them .The Bibio ,greenwell Glory, The selection of Teal fly's are doing well. July The Pheasant Tail Nymph is catching some nice trout just now. The better trout seem to be out in the deeper water which means the breast waders are needed to reach them. Peter Ross, Butcher's, Black Pennel, Mallard and Claret, Connemara Black and the Invicta fly's are all worth a try this month. Dry fly's to try are Black Gnat, Hawthorn. Wickam's Fancy, Sedge, or Daddy Longlegs are all worth a try this month. August The reservoir is at its highest just now with all the rain. But there is still some nice fish being caught,It is mostly traditional flies that are catching the fish ..Petr Ross --- Mallard and Claret----Wickams Fancy---- Silver Invicta--- Connemara ----BlackKate Mclaren -- and the Butcher . All worth a try. September . The reservoir is still at its highest level just now. But there is still plenty of fly life on the water most days olives and sedges have been hatching and the trout and swallows have had a good time moping them up. The trout are rising out the water and taking the sedges on the way down ,which makes it hard to connect with some of them some times you will get a pull and other times they seem to miss the fly altogether but that's fishing for you it cant be easy all the time. There are still some nice fish in the 1lb plus being caught also plenty of small natural trout being caught and returned.
