Local walk 9
This footpath was once a continuation of Drift Road, Whitehill, an Old Drovers' Road which led to the Petersfield/Farnham Turnpike, now the A325. The path entrance from Petersfield Road, Whitehill is marked by a litter bin. The path surface is washed sand, as in very wet weather a small stream runs down the slope of the path. The north west edge is marked by a line of Oak trees growing on a boundary bank. The path runs up hill to Whitehill Village Hall. At the top of the path on the north-west side are the ruins of the Lovell's House. It was in their field that the George V Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1935 were held. The path at one time would have continued across Sutton Fields towards Footpath 15 and Drift Road. Between Nos 64 and 65 Sutton Fields, Footpath 9 is delineated by chain link fencing. The path is initially tarmaced but the end is overgrown with nettles. It finishes in a flight of 21 and then 11 steps which lead down into the old military railway line. These steps are short from front to back and are sloping because of the build up of silt, so care is needed. At this point there is much litter in the railway cutting which needs to be crossed to climb a split flight of 30 steps on the other side. This leads to the military land of the Hogmoor Inclosure. The sandy path crosses this between gorse bushes and leads towards the houses in Champney Close. Here it turns west and follows along the back of the houses of Firgrove. The edge of the path has many plants of shining cranesbill with pretty little red flowers in the summer. Finally the track emerges onto Hogmoor Road at a junction with a tarmace path leading back to Firgrove.
